Desert
Every year, Deserts receive less than ten inches of rain. In many Deserts in the world, there are high temperatures during the day, and cooler temperatures during the nighttime. With these conditions, plants which need minimal amounts of water, like Cacti, survive extremely well in such climates. Also animals like lizards, snakes, and insects inhabit the deserts. Many animals living in the desert are nocturnal because of the excessive heat during the day. For some animals, migration is necessary for certain parts of the year.
The Desert biome covers about 20% of earths land mass. There are multiple deserts, and there are also different kinds of deserts. These are Arid, Semi-Arid, Coastal, and Cold deserts. The Arid deserts occur at low latitudes and can mainly be found in North America, South America, Africa, and Southern Asia. These deserts are generally dry and precipitation is low. Semi-arid deserts have more defined seasons, but still with little rainfall. Many animals living in these deserts migrate during the hot season. Coastal deserts are found in moderately cool areas where the winters are cool and short, but the summers are hot causing animals to be nocturnal. Lastly, Cold Deserts. Cold deserts are often cold and get snow in the winter. These types of deserts are not ideal for plants and animals to grow and reproduce. Animals that live in Cold Deserts tend to be burrowers, and herbivores are only found here during the winter when there tends to be more grass.
Environmental issues facing the desert are the possibility of human inhabitance, where humans may start to develop on the desert, off road vehicles disturbing how the desert naturally is, and irrigation, where water may be unnaturally applied.
